No senior pass discount. Ascend from Canyon de Chelly to the plateau via a route used by ancient canyon inhabitants. If you hike down to the canyon floor, you'll see authentic Anasazi ruins that transport you back in time. Take a tour from an authorized Navajo guide and walk the White House Ruin Trail.
The campground was in need of some work. The angle of the sun accents these graceful formations, providing scenery that is simply spellbinding. Stay hydrated (you're in the desert, after all)—And give yourself enough time to explore this magical park. A little spendy for what amounts to dry camping in winter, but you still get a level spot, garbage, a picnic table, and a dump station. Rising with the sun, we break camp before hiking down Canyon Del Muerto. Best known for globally significant Late Triassic fossils, the park attracts many researchers. Stayed here one night on our summer 2019 boondocking trip.

The Canyon de Chelly is amazing.
Beams occur most often in the summer months, as they require the sun to be high in the sky. Be sure to incorporate some smaller treasures during your visit, such as Navajo Nation Window Rock Monument & Veteran Memorial Park, or Hubbell Trading Post and the many other national historic site.
Interpretive signs provide information on local flora and other topics. The sites were messy and need to be cleaned and raked up and they were working on the restrooms. Boondocking in this area is rare to nonexistent, so it’s one of the few choices in town (other than private rv park). The farms, livestock and hogans of the Dine’ are visible from the canyon rims. There is a dump station and there are water spigots located throughout the campground. The Navajo Parks and Recreation Department (NPRD) manages the Cottonwood Campground and collects fees for camping. Stand in one spot and have one hand in Colorado, the other in Utah, one foot in New Mexico and the other in Arizona! There are also ... Loop 3 was closed. I will stay here again. It was early October so not crowded.
Only 8 to 12 feet wide along the sandy floor, the slot canyons have been featured in Hollywood films and magazine publications around the world.
The sites here are pretty big and nicely paved. From Holbrook, AZ take State Hwy 77 to Indian Rte 15 in Indian Wells 41 miles. This area has a long history going back as far as pre-historic times & the subsequent arrival of Spanish & European settlers. The Navajo Nation is a large remote area, be prepared and always use common sense.
From the grand sandstone masterpieces of monument valley to the ancient pueblo ruins of Canyon de Chelly there’s plenty to see, do, and learn from on the Arizona side of the Navajo reservation.

Winter colors are more muted.
In this part of Canyon De Chelly wild turkey, black bear, and skunks outnumber the domestic animals that live here. Cost: $3.00/person. Some spots could fit big rigs, but could be tight.

There are also more than a few stray dogs wandering throughout the campground which sadly is to be expected on the Navajo Reservation.

Chinle is 75 miles north of I-40 exit 333 on U.S. Route 191 in Northeast Arizona. Hotels near Canyon de Chelly Cottonwood Campground, Hotels near Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Hotels near Oklahoma Christian University. Our spot was level enough with a little messing with. Had to do minor leveling. But you'll feel as if you're in your own private Grand Canyon. The sites here are pretty big and nicely paved.
The gorgeous sloping angles of the rocks – coupled with the shifts of light that make their way down from the rim of the canyon – combine for a scene that cannot be fully explained with words. I thoroughly enjoyed this hike.
