This resource discusses the Stolen Generations and themes that may be sensitive for students and teachers, and particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Indigenous Australians who experienced life on the missions are invited to contribute to the collection with their stories and any artefacts that may be willing to share. The Stolen Generations issue has been in the news and on television a lot over the past few years. The assimilation policy and the removal of Indigenous children continued into the 1960s. The story is told in a way that simplifies the complex nature of the issue without making it seem like an “easy” book. As the issue of Indigenous rights gained new attention in the late 1960s, the Australian government changed the goal of its policy from assimilation to “integration” and then, in the 1970s, to self-determination.
The separation of Indigenous children from their families was an important part of the assimilation strategy. Like the previous resource, They Took the Children is directly relevant to the topic of the Stolen Generations. These are all appropriate for the targeted students. and device provision will impact upon the usability of this resource.
