A nice try from Nintendo at trying something new, King of Swing plows into new territory with fresh game mechanics centered around the familiar Donkey Kong Universe. Pressing both triggers at once will cause the character to jump, while holding the triggers will cause them to store up power, after which they will perform a charge attack when the triggers are released. The strategy of always being able to heal or become invincible (provided you have enough bananas) is a great idea. There are five worlds to play through, each with five stages that present different mechanics such as wind or switches. At the end of each level, you'll face off against one of King K. Rool's henchmen in a typical boss battle. In fact, Donkey Kong doesn't swing-dance at all in the game, but he sure does dangle, twirl, and swing from a vast variety of pegs and peglike objects. Players control Donkey Kong as he travels across five worlds, each made up of four stages and a boss battle.
However, before the tournament can take place, King K. Rool comes crashing down and swipes all the medals! It sounds kind of like a duck making a loud "MMMWAA" sound, and you hear it every time you back out of a menu. There are also nice little touches, like seeing DK's tie fly up in the air as he falls back down, having DK beat his chest and slap the ground when he's idling, and seeing his legs react as you swing in a direction. The boss encounters and random weather-afflicted stages that cause DK to float do break up the monotony of peg spinning somewhat, but there are thousands more pegs than enemies in the game.
