This book, although not written by a Christian, is an excellent telling of personal stories of those who by preserverence kept their trust in Christ in times that would test one's faith. The only thing I would have liked to have seen in this book would be accounts from members of the churches that joined the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. Though God is Red arises from one man’s personal journey, Liao displays a wonderful ability to keep the lives and stories of his interview subjects the focus of the book.

Deloria encourages critical dialogue with thought provoking alternative theories to many timely religious topics and debates which are more relevant today than ever. In an interview with Dr. Sun, Liao questions why faith would be an obstacle to the career of someone with such excellent experience and pedigree.

Liao’s narrative remains subservient to his primary concern, engaging the reader in order to carry us along for the discovery of the “extraordinary stories” promised.

From 1964–1967, he had served as executive director of the National Congress of American Indians, increasing tribal membership from 19 to 156. We are grateful for what we have today… In our society today, people’s minds are entangled and chaotic. ‘I’ve led an ordinary life,’ he said humbly. Deloria points to the religious hunger in America and sees interest in the occult as a manifestation of the search for a more refreshing and meaningful spirituality. Deloria is perhaps what today we call a religious extremist, but his university educated mind channels the point of view sorely lacking in today's discourse in religious tolerance: that of Native peoples.

One of the minor stories that appears throughout the book that I think is important to highlight, is that many of the mission cemeteries were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.

As it stands, the book gives the impression that the groups that didn’t join suffered disproportionately compared to other Christians in China, or that those who joined did it out of cowardice and fear.

Before it was first published in 1973, scholars tended to portray Native traditions either as though they were frozen in a timeless past or as though they were precarious survivals of premodern times.

This scholarly work by Vine Deloria, Jr. is a difficult read. He met a number of Chinese Christians and became interested in their various histories. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features.
