I try not to describe things as pretentious, but it is one of the few Von Trier films I can sit through. I appreciated it a bit more when I read about Trier's national-romantic intentions in abusing Wagner like that, he said something about how it was supposed to be like a music video.Tbh I feel like It's almost the opposite of pretentious, it's verging on anti-intellectual. They all seem to do nothing particular for the story except add a sense of petty sophistication in an effort to add a veneer of upper classness and intellectuality, as if the film were too afraid of its subject and were desperate to be taken seriously. I can understand how people who don't have depression would be likely to write off Justine's behaviour as that of a self-obsessed bitch (and I wouldn't be surprised if this would have been my reaction if I saw the film before the depression came), but I completely identified with that character and in a lot of ways I feel that this movie gave me the words to express how I'm feeling. I think the effect adds into the greater concept of what the movie is trying to portray.
Kirsten Dunst's character is deeply depressed, Kiefer Sutherland views the world through pure reason and Gainsbourg just tries to keep it together.
I’ve heard Antichrist is tough to watch but I do want to see another von Trier film in order to better understand him as a filmmaker.
I re-watched the first half just the other day, and will watch the second half again soon. The thing the movie gets to me is how well it understands depression. Notice the relationship between Justine and her father. Justine’s depression makes it hard for her loved ones to deal with her which in turn feeds the depression which culminates in her lashing out which wears on her loved ones again. All rights reserved.
