This inviting trail is well-maintained with hard-packed soil, benches, and small creek-crossing bridges. The park is located less than 3 hours from Seattle in northern Washington just below the Canadian border.

Lower elevation trails may be accessible from April, but the snows tend to linger for much longer on higher ground, meaning that many of the popular hiking routes are inaccessible. The powerhouse grounds are well lit during this time too, but there are sections nearing the falls that remain dark at all times. While the trail ends over 17 miles downlake, the first portion can be done as an easy day hike and includes excellent views of McGregor Mountain, Castle Rock, and other surrounding hills. Here, the views are breathtaking. Surrounded in beautiful temperate rainforest, listen to the soothing sounds of Happy Creek flowing along this 0.3 mile boardwalk.

Waterton Canyon Trail is a 12.4-mile, out-and-back trail that follows the South Platte River to the Strontia Springs Dam near Littleton, Colorado. It’s a short walk with big rewards.

Easy to access from the North Cascades Visitor Center, the intertwined To Know a Tree Trail and River Loop offer interpretive signage, easy forest walking, and access to a gravel bar on the bank of the Skagit River. These trails also connect the visitor center to the nearby outdoor amphitheater, where ranger presentations are frequently held, and the Newhalem Creek Campground. There are a few family-friendly hikes near the visitor center and popular campgrounds, but be aware that the extreme alpine topography of the park dictates that most of its trails must go up and into the rugged high country.

What about folks that want an easy to moderate hike under 3 miles that will achieve a spectacular view of Glacier’s alpine peaks and lakes? A side spur at the ridge leads to a scramble up Thornton Peak, which provides the best view over the three cirque lakes. Split by the Skagit River, North Cascades National Park is comprised of a northern and southern section. Parking has four spaces plus two ADA parking spots. Though the park lies only three hours east of Seattle, it feels like a boundless expanse of all that is natural and good in the world once you are within its borders. It is named after Washington state politician Sterling Munro, who played an instrumental role in creating North Cascades National Park and was extensively involved in the passage of natural resources legislation like the National Environmental Protection Act.
There are over 300 glaciers in the park and 400 miles of trails to roam. A boat dock and pit toilet are located at its trailhead. Time has made it a beautiful, cozy space, though.
