Another of my favorite stories was Marvin Monster, written by Jim Lugwig with finishes, colors and letters by the incredible talented, Kevin S. Halter. The pulp-tastic story apparently jumps back and forth between two different periods in Dracula’s life and involves three of his brides, a crime scene photographer, and a mystery. The end result is breathtaking, earnest, and a truly essential read — one that you’ll want to read in one sitting, but that will stick with you long after. It’s a perfect marriage of words and pictures. The series’ letter column is also one of the funniest and most heartfelt constants in comics right now -- just look at issue #27, where Fraction and Zdarsky send a Chili’s gift card to a pair of young queer fans for reasons that are too endearing to explain here. Against all the odds, The Dreaming proved a worthy successor to The Sandman and worth every fan's attention. This is overwhelmingly apparent with its final arc, which began this January after a year-and-a-half-long hiatus.
