Personally, I like Hemingways "Old Man and the Sea," perhaps a little bit better, but "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is certainly a richer, broader and more in-depth story.

Hemingway is also a rare writer who knows how to speak to men, he understands what drives them and no matter how complicated the character, the inevitable faults and humanity still shine thru.

He wrote using a lot of his friends personalities and descriptions for his characters. I have listened may times now and I have a fairly long commute to and from work.

I have long been a Hemingway fan but have not been through all his writings.

To be honest the narration of this book is extremely flat. These additional episodes feature a star-studded cast of narrators to coincide with the upcoming release of the film.

Perhaps Hemingway got better in his later books. Josh Lucas, Narrated by: I feel like I was there, with them, in the mountains, dedicated to the cause.

It is an odd device Hemingway employs by substituting "obscenity" or "unprintable" for Spanish cuss words.

James Naughton, By: "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is Ernest Hemingway's famous "Spanish Civil War" novel.

Also, he uses "thou" and "thy" at times in place of "you" to represent the moving between formal (usted) and informal (tu) Spanish.

He makes a gripping experience of Hemingway's difficult, searing war story.

A truly powerful novel, enhanced by the author's use of an almost biblical style in translating Spanish dialogue to English. Joseph Heller, Narrated by: Cancel anytime. Introduced by Hemingway’s grandson Seán Hemingway, this newly annotated edition and literary masterpiece about an American in the Spanish Civil War features early drafts and supplementary material—including three previously uncollected short stories on war by one the greatest writers on the subject in history. I believe everyone needs to read this book. I don't think Hemmingway is for me, or maybe I am just a literary infidel, masculine, full of deep questions about what truly is important when facing the inevitable end. I had not read Hemingway at all except for Old Man and the Sea. Audio.

No monthly commitment. Spanish phrases are magically blended with their English meanings. How strange to be asked by Amazon to review this book!

So, I hope you don't let reviews warning of censorship (or my technical review here) scare you away from a truly wonderful, thought provoking novel.

Great narration Mr. Scott!

His is For Whom the Bell Tolls.

By: I find Hemingway pretty heavy going to read, but the narration of this book was superb and I didn’t want the book to end. Did it make you laugh or cry? Not an easy book to get into as the writing style is very individual and quite hard to get used to - it may irritate some readers but the writing detail is superb and the observation of the characters is exact and leaves you with a perfect impression of each person. I felt immersed in guerrilla units lives. The book did what I dimly remembered it did: it showed the local, human dimension of the war rather than the history book battle of ideologies we usually see. Having never read any Hemingway before I decided it was time to be educated. Never before have I been so enthralled in the love and misfortune of the tragic life of a lonely man made solider. To Hemingway's credit, his idealism with the Republican cause was severely punctured by the Marxist incompetence, ideological brutality, and Soviet meddling that doomed the Republican cause from the start. I think the lack of verbiage is part a reflection of the view expressed by many of his characters that it doesn’t do to talk about significant things too much and part the simple fact that the characters themselves don’t understand what they’re feeling.

He oddly fixates on rope-soled shoes, and of course alcohol is present on every page.

Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from “the good fight,” and one of the foremost classics of war literature in history. Enjoyed the book thoroughly.

World War Z: The Complete Edition (Movie Tie-in Edition): An Oral History of the Zombie War is a new version of Max Brooks' episodic zombie novel. I'm going through all his work now-can't get enough he's a genius.

Campbell Scott took on the voices of the many different characters in a very believable and convincing way. This book is NOT censored. This book brings up some facts about war I think we can still learn from.

For other Hemingway novices though I have to add that this by no means an 'easy listen' and if you want fast moving action I wouldn't chose this (are all of Hemingway's books like this?).

Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author's previous works, it stands as one of the best war novels of all time.

One cannot help but be impressed by the way that Hemingway draws out his story, frustrating as it might at times become.
