split second movie review

The production of Split Second has been described as challenging and difficult by those behind the scenes, with director Tony Maylam (The Burning) heading for the hills at some point, leaving assistant Ian Sharp to finish some scenes off for the final product. This review of Split is loaded with spoilers. Split Second was intended to be more occult-oriented until Thompson decided to leave the description of the killer intentionally vague and more open to the imagination. Stone manages to kill the creature by tearing its heart out but, as the detectives leave the scene with Michelle in a rescue dinghy, bubbles of air are seen breaking the surface of the water, suggesting that there might be more than one monster. Will London sink before they get to ‘the creature’? This 1992 film is actually very watchable and quite enjoyable, but there’s always this nagging sentiment about lost potential that’s always lurking behind every corner. The watery London looks great, with flooded streets, muted colours and the odd flicker of neon. The climactic fight scene was choreographed and directed by Ian Sharp, who started making television shows like Minder, The Professionals and Robin Of Sherwood until Robert Zemeckis hired him to direct the second unit on Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

The story itself is a patchwork of other SF/Horror films.

It’s also a great reminder of just what an impressive figure the late Hauer was, dominating the screen and pulling the story along with him. The scene when the claws cover Hauer’s face is one of the film’s best images, and more could’ve been made of the apparent mental connection between the two, but that’s pretty much the story of Split Second in a nutshell: missed opportunities. A Movie Ramblings Guide: How To Survive A Horror Movie, The Best Foreign Horror Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen, Month Of Myers: Halloween Resurrection (2002). Tony Maylam – a rather mediocre filmmaker whose best work involves documentaries – was brought in to direct and Thompson was kept on for rewrites. All that was needed was a star name. Gary Scott Thompson’s (The Fast and The Furious franchise) screenplay was actually written in the late 80s, so this makes sense, as the conception of the killer is a somewhat unoriginal mixture of Aliens and Predator so it all ties together. ~ George Pacheco, 09 Joins Forces with MEMPHIS MAY FIRE’s Matty Mullins for “Masquerade”. It’s almost as if Split Second wants to do too much, and is too excited about the creation of its world, that it doesn’t spend enough time making sure that each idea is complete before moving on to the next one. Written in 1988 and set in present-day Los Angeles, the story involved a ritualistic serial killer who has committed five murders every five years for the last quarter of a century, leaving a pentagram symbol. There are also two featurettes from 1992, as well as TV spots, theatrical trailers and a US VHS ‘promo spot’ (which highlights a nifty Split Second t-shirt that was up for grabs). Creature effects designer Cliff Wallace, cinematographer Clive Tickner, and line producer Laura Borg are also interviewed, and everyone seems quite game to discuss their jobs on the film and how they feel about the product today. The Japanese cut can be watched in its entirety, or simply watch the added footage (which includes another heart-ripping murder). We see only flashes of it until the end. All will be revealed, and it is a tremendous amount of fun getting there.

During an intense battle in the abandoned underground railway, Michelle is found as bait, suspended over water. This isn’t to say that the creature is poorly designed, mind you, it’s just that we see so little of it at the end of the day. Unfortunately, after all this preparation and production at a breakneck pace while keeping the budget under US$7m, the film was considered a flop taking a mere US$5m at the box-office.

On the other hand, if you do like B-grade movies, you should check this one out because it has all the makings of a cult favourite (or at least a guilty pleasure): fast-paced action in a tech-noir near-future Britain starring Rutger Hauer. The setting of a waterlogged London is great, but also underused, as is the side plot of rat infestation and disease infecting the populous. He has written three books - on the horror films of director Bob Clark (2014), the history of the character Norman Bates (2015) and the work of British exploitation director Pete Walker (2017).

Rookie police officer Dick Durkin (Neil Duncan) meets his new partner Harley Stone (Rutger Hauer), a burnt-out highly cynical veteran homicide detective who survives on anxiety, coffee and chocolate.

Toodles! This is where Challenge Films comes in. Your email address will not be published. The great news is this new blu-ray confirms that, a fast-paced, gory romp that does not take itself too seriously – and is all the better for it. The MVD Blu-ray doesn’t miss ANY opportunities when it comes to the extras, however, as this disc is completely packed to the gills. Brought back from suspension, Stone is put on the case and assigned a new partner – Dick (Neil Duncan), an educated, inexperienced, suit-and-tie wearing sidekick who has degrees in criminology, has studied serial killers etc. I wish there were even more. I’ve always wanted to play a cartoon character with the accent on humour. Even worse, the killer may not actually be human – if its penchant for ripping out and devouring victims’ hearts is anything to go by. This is another plot thread that’s never fully realized, despite flashbacks that imply Stone’s former partner was a victim of the monster in the past. ! There’s an argument over whether it will look good or not because it is ultimately a man in a suit.” Stephen Norrington, animatronics and prosthetics designer for an array of genre films during the eighties and nineties – from Aliens (1986) to Blade (1998) – came up with the H.R. Best of all though, is 101 have dug up the Japanese cut of the film, which included scenes edited out of the version shown elsewhere. Hauer had Thompson rewrite the climax to make it more physical and to better define the psychic link his cop character has with the creature. In fact, each killing has been a deliberate attempt to lure Stone closer to his fate. Split Second book.

Can this odd couple crack the case? He’s paired with modern voiceover star Neil Duncan as his new partner, an educated health nut who’s saddled with the ridiculous moniker of Dick Durkin. When Split Second was released on VHS and eventually DVD some scenes were missing, including additional murders, dream sequences, and meeting Durkin’s girlfriend Robin (Roberta Eaton). It reminds me of Norrington’s ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ in the sense that I have to admit both are a little dumb but I enjoyed the hell out of each regardless. It does however provide a good ninety minutes of solid entertainment in a fascinating environment – the rain-lashed semi-flooded London is an interesting premise and is explored as much as the budget would allow (although you might get tired of hearing the song Nights In White Satin by the Moody Blues which features prominently throughout as the romantic theme). “We had heated discussions about whether to show it or not. Film Reviews, “In 2008, London is suffering from the worst flooding in a decade. It’s a fun bit if sci-fi fluff obviously inspired by Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982) and Predator (1987). FOZZY Announces Capturing Judas Livestream! If you continue to use this site we will assume that you are happy with it. “Split Second is an extremely stupid monster film, boasting enough violence and special effects to satisfy less-discriminating vid fans.” (Lawrence Cohn) “It’s hard to think of a less satisfying creature feature in recent memory than the simply terrible Split Second.” (Chris Wellman) “Fairly dull.” (Stephen Holden) “Utterly soulless and imitative.” (Doug Brod). I’ve now got to the age where ‘retro’ releases focus on films I saw first time round, and latest to add to the list is 1992 Rutger Hauer sci-fi/horror/actioner Split Second, which I remember lapping up at the cinema on original release (pretty sure it was the MGM Trocadero). I remember enjoying Split Second a great deal when I first saw it on VHS – a minor cult film amongst friends at the time – but if it wasn’t for the chemistry of the two lead actors and their over-the-top characters, the film wouldn’t be worth watching. Hauer only had a limited gap in his schedule so, after only twenty-one days of hectic pre-production, Split Second started a twelve-week shoot at a number of unusual London locations: “What I liked about Split Second were the twists it brought to the routine buddy-cop formula. Co-producer Laura Gregory: “It screamed Rutger Hauer. It would be nice to spoil the entire movie. But similarities to Robert Resnikoff‘s The First Power (1990) seemed to sink the chance of it ever being made. Will Stone make the moves on his dead partner’s wife (played by Kim Cattrall no less) who seems to have the hots for him as well? The script’s buddy-cop concept was reworked and the setting changed to London in the far-flung future year of 2008. So, it’s Halloween again (well, nearly). Thompson came up with the premise of global warming for the rewrite when someone mentioned casually that the level of the river Thames rises every year. Vintage featurettes from the film’s original home video release are also included, as well as deleted scenes from the Japanese cut of the film. Split Second is a semi-guilty pleasure.

It is the year 2008, and global warming and heavy rainfall has left large areas of London flooded. Read 2,493 reviews from the world's largest community for readers. 03/28/2019 Full of one-liners, explosive action sequences, wacky characters (Michael J Pollard pops up as a ‘rat catcher’ and impressive effects, Split Second (and director Tony Maylam) belies its budget to come up with something really eye-catching and memorable, building to a thrilling climax at an abandoned tube station. Above Alaska he excitedly radioed down a message saying he wanted to meet Maylam two days later in L.A.”. This was apparently intentional, with the producers and crew going for more of a Jaws vibe of restraint, as opposed to going all out with some creature feature carnage. He is currently working with director Richard Loncraine to explore all avenues in a bid to orchestrate the re-release of 1978 Mia Farrow chiller Full Circle.

A mix of serial killer thriller, buddy cop movie – and ‘Alien’, Split Second is set in the ‘future of 2008’, where global warming has reduced London to a watery sewer, chock full of low-lives and rats. In other words, Split Second looks as good as it’s probably ever going to look, so kudos to MVD for all of their loving work that clearly went into this restoration and release.
