My heart goes out to her family that lived through that nightmare. This diary of a 14 year old girl who was not only raped but left with the HIV virus is gut-wrenching. Her budding romance with a different boy her age was probably the hardest to read, as both she and I knew her talk of growing old with him and having his children, whould never happen, since some older guy decided to rape her. He's 18, charming, smart, cute, and treats her with respect... or so she thinks. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. The fact that it's a true story makes it all the harder to read. Very informative and sad as well. It turns out his real name is Gary and that he's 32 years old.
At first she dosen't know how to deal but soon, with the help of her family and friends she learns to deal with it as best she can. Even though this book was in the young adult section of the library it didn't at all stop me from picking it up, reading it and touching my heart.
I read this book twice in a row at fourteen and cried at the end both times, after having earlier scoffed at the book because of how stupid and naïve Nancy acted. This poor girl had her life taken away from her before it really ever started. I felt so bad for Nancy and was close to tears more than a few times during the course of the book. It Happened to Nancy follows the YA-enticing diary format seen years ago in Go Ask Alice, which also was edited by Sparks.
