soul boy bbc documentary

A teenager in care finds a home on Nottingham’s Northern Soul scene. He may at some point decide to delve into the murky waters of the real scene but I somehow can't see that happening.

It wasn't about reflecting the soul scene in it's full varieties. Will have to watch this on catch up soon. ?/ FFS.

I mentioned line dancing in Blackpool some time ago and got a right telling off from Mike. Let's hope the flood gates open with youngsters looking for salvation when the flood gates of the venues open again.

He has had a tough start to life, one most cannot imagine. I understand your views,  but i totally watched the programme as it being a journey Anthony was starting on, he will decide what rocks his boat, the scene has been debated to death on here and its apples and pears,  some love the oldies some want new stuff constantly, it gave a lad whose had a shit life joy and thats enough for me, forums are about opinions and long may that continue. Luke says Anthony's passion for the genre is unique.

As the teenager approached his 18th birthday he was filmed for a documentary called Soul Boy. The documentary shows the close relationship between Anthony and Luke Greenhill. Stay Soulful, Knocker x. As Anthony prepares for his first DJ set, his friends are there to make sure he looks and sounds the part. It won’t be easy - the Soul Boy will need his new Soul 'family' more than ever.

What a lovely story. Just nice to see somebody who looks plugged in to the energy on the floor.

I just hope he has a laugh , meets good people and enjoys the music and dancing ...if it makes him happy to keep enjoying those nights - then good on him. .css-14iz86j-BoldText{font-weight:bold;}"When I'm on the dancefloor and Northern Soul music is playing I feel like this is where I lie, this is like your home.". And thank you Soul Source for the heads up. Not complaining just an observation as I don't mind PP Arnold, Solomon King and Kenny Lynch.

Billed as a 'heart warming' film this 30 minute documentary follows teenager Anthony Flavin as he finds his place on Nottingham’s Northern Soul scene. Heaven forbid that we are going to be seen as uncool    I enjoyed it, 30 minutes of escapism on a Wednesday night does no-one any harm. "He were so happy and I thought, 'that were me when I were his age'," he says. well northern soul was always about self expression.

At about the same age, I luvvved interplay too! A nice kid who really enjoys himself and seems really into it and this is not an oldies type venue like the TV program, so hopefully he's got a broad mind. A heart warming human interest story.

I doubt he will move on from the parody that is Shirebrook and its line dancing but he is enjoying himself. Well done everyone who helped make that lovely short film .

The 100 club is where the lad needs to head off to next.

interlopers.

The relationship between the lad and his carer(s) was heartwarming and those who have shown him friendship and love deserve the plaudits that come their way. Heartwarming,  hope the lad continues to find some joy in the ns scene and his life.

The scene I knew was "sometimes" a little unwelcoming to newcomers and this proves that there is at least a push to do so, I have already noticed the comments on FB asking for "how to dance" lessons. Just looked like a bit of good fun to me .

Anthony has grown up in care from the age of six.

This heart-warming film follows Anthony in the run-up to his 18th birthday as he finds his place on Nottingham’s Northern Soul scene.

Yes watched it. I thought group dance thing was fun for those involved ..doesn’t the history of black dance have a deep heritage with formation dancing ? I hope he is still bouncing about at 6 in the morning! The dancing will get better as 'the shoe' told him.

Keep spinning the wheels of steel and wearing your shoes out on Northern Soul Dance Floors up and down our wonderful land. Excellent programme, enjoy the ride Anthony. It shows what it feels like when you first discover the music. I too have been to the Shirebrook event and even DJ'd there. Viewing from the outside probably yes they do believe it portrays the scene.

Great programme and I'm envious of the journey he's got ahead of him. If someone is loving their music and the friendships and the events...then that soul scene works perfectly for them and many others... Well I truly and sincerely hope Anthony;s personal journey is not skewed by the line dancing display because that is DEFINITELY NOT anything to do with the Soul Scene I am passionate about, Northern Soul Line Dancing ????????????
The doc centres around Anthony Flavin, who grew up in care and recently moved to Nottingham, as he finds a sense of belonging from an unlikely place - Northern Soul.

Nisha Chopra, who co-produced the documentary, said the filming was emotional at times - especially when Anthony went to Blackpool to meet a legendary DJ. Nisha said over the two months it took to shoot and edit the film, all of the crew members formed their own bond with Anthony. Anthony's passion for the music and dancing has also had an effect on other people, including shoemaker Pete "The Shoe" Bullock. Soul Boy, a documentary from Nottingham filmmakers Luke Radford and Toby Curson, will feature on BBC One on Wednesday 27 May. Soul music is soul music, wherever and whenever it's played. As the teenager approached his 18th birthday he was filmed for a documentary called Soul Boy. If that happens it will most certainly die when we've all passed on!!! Next thing will be dancers dancing in pairs....heaven forbid.

Good luck to the lad , I also think his mentor/guide was a credit to himself and his generation.

Good luck to him, maybe see him at the 100 Club sometime.

What a wonderful young fella !

BBC have put up a tie-in article on their website  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-52502198. Pete had not been on the soul scene for a long time, but seeing Anthony moving on the dancefloor one night deeply resonated with him. interlopers. Do people really believe that sort of televised display portrays the 'Real' Soul Scene !?! "Within minutes I'd got on the dancefloor myself then and something just clicked and I realised, I'm in my happiest days again, I'm dancing to Northern.". It doesn't matter what the viewers watching thought of the scene or the music played. ..whilst it may not be seen as rare soul “cool” here, it certainly would in many places, through many decades, around the world . The programme was all about a teenage lad who loves the 1960's/70s era and has a big  taste for Northern Soul and dressing up smart getting out and enjoying himself, and making lots of new friends.

Northern Soul is more than just music to Anthony Flavin - it’s a way of life. Good for you Anthony, I'll look forward to meeting you.

"He takes me to these, probably to build my confidence, to build my independence and to just make me feel like I'm happy, and to get out so I can enjoy myself," he says.

A new BBC documentary, Soul Boy, follows a Nottingham-based Northern Soul obsessive who has been in the care system since the age of six. Glad to see Anthony enjoying the scene so much, really great how it brings so many people together. "I suddenly realised I was getting a little bit depressed.".

"All the crew really had to hold back the tears when Anthony met Richard Searling, as it was quite something to see a young lad get this masterclass from a Northern Soul legend and for Anthony it was very overwhelming," she says. Will look forward to meeting Anthony at some point.

Has he mastered the decks in time to get thisdiscerning crowd on the dancefloor?

Has he mastered the decks in time to get this discerning crowd on the dancefloor? As I said he is enjoying Shirebrook and the rest and best of luck to him, thats all that matters at the end of the day.
