Just to name one example, the whole discussion of American slavery was revelatory--how the native African resistance to malaria and yellow fever played in, how traditions of slavery in Africa differed from how the Europeans used slaves, and how race as we now think of it was not the huge factor we deem it, with our contemporary mindset.
